The drums began before Mary could speak.

They were not the drums of celebration, nor the drums of soldiers marching toward glory. They were the hard, flat drums of a frightened city, struck by men who had been told that silence must be enforced with sound. The beat rolled against the timbered houses, rattled through the narrow streets, and pressed against the crowd gathering along the way…


To all who have been told to be silent,

yet still listen for the living Christ...
